San Francisco Day one

So I am in SFO! WOw only as I would say. I'm in the heart of the computer heartland and it's good. So day one started with us having a scrumptious breakfast, followed by a talk by a CMU alum who is a venture capitalist. Not that I want to explore this option but it seems really fascinating. Maybe 20 years down the line I would like to look into this. Let us see. The fact that you get to invest in something that you believe in sure seems interesting.
After that we left for google. And it was good. But i dont see much happening for our career there. IT was more like having lunch and then there was a Q&A session with CMU alum. The place was gorgeous though and the facilities were top class. It would be amazing to work there. But boy is it tough to get in. The principle there is to have food accessible within 100 feet of one's cubicle. There is so much variety and so much vegeterian too. So it was great. But I wonder how people remain thin there??? I met krishna bharat for about 2 minutes. He was so sweet and down to earth. Imagine if I was the inventor of google news, I would probably scoff at everyone but he was so humble. It's so nice to meet such human beings. I guess that's why they are able to remain at that level.
Following google we visited intel. We visited the intel museum (it was simply superb) followed by meeting hiring managers from the different software divisions. Everyone gave a detailed explanation of what they were looking for and we had time to interact with them. It was really nice. I mean I though intel was a predominantly chip company and there was more to it then just that. Right from compiler writing to lot of software work like enterprise architecture, J2EE stuff and lot of architecture. Wow I wish I could get in!
We had dinner at this fancy pub at san francisco again courtesy Intel. It was fancy but there was just one yucky vegeterian starter. I just had it because there was nothing much to eat. It was nice because i got to speak with one person who worked for 24 years at intel. He was doing something that I'd like to get into. He was from swindon UK and he felt that I should probably target going to bangalore and join intel there. He he...anyway...it was funny. I am now solely resigned to fate. Let's see what happens. I'm glad i took this tour though. It really makes you feel very motivated to be a part of the movement. I think it's a great place to work. Lots of cutting edge technology happening here.

 Intra apartment Tennis Tournament After a gap of nearly 7 years I took part in a tennis tournament at my apartment community in Bangalore. Unlike the younger days when I used to participate in league matches, I was a bit rusty on the tournament front. The funny thing is I do not find many women playing in the community. Hence to have a separate women’s tournament at the community is impossible. Therefore I persuaded my tennis male buddies to allow me to participate in the tournament when the idea was first mooted. They did not need much persuasion as they know I am a certified tennis lover like all of them. This brings an important point, most minorities just want to be treated equally and get a seat at the table. Game,set and match I knew my shot of winning a tournament like this was a long one. Errr..Arghhh

School is finishing up and generally emotions are running high. There are a lot of things to do. ON top of all this I have been wondering about the human psyche. The words that come to my mind is the "power game". Some people want to always be at the higher end of the equation. Well it's not possible always. I mean the people who generally make the effort to always keep in touch also loose out sometimes. I mean they're also tired. How many times can they alone keep it going? How much of work all these things are! Is ego everything in life? Or is this some sort of message that others have to read. A really close friend of mine is going thru a rough patch now because she was at the lower end of the equation. I always told her it was fine and you do not have to go by book. She was fed up of the mind games and the moves she had to play. It was like constant game of chess. My sister often gets into these introspective moods and I used to blame her then for over analyzing. ...

Snow, Skis and pain

I signed up for a SKI trip organized by graduate student wing at school because I felt I must do something different. I mean for a person from the tropics getting to do something in snow is bloody exciting. So we left in the morning at 6:45 AM for seven spring ski resort. Though it hasn't snowed for a week at pitt these people kind of preserve the snow with some chemicals and something else. So we entered seven springs and it was really cold. The person from the tropics was of course well equipped. Three layers of sweaters followed by the BIG FAT UGLY red jacket. But a girl's gotta do what she's gotta do when it's below freezing. So after the initial ski lesson we learnt the basics of sking. Then it was upto us to practics and try stuff. So I skied for about 6 hours yesterday and right now my feet feel like jelly fish and my hand and feet are swollen. The thing about sking is that one needs to learn from your mistake everytime you fall. But me being a slow learner, took...
